Conor McGregor and Floyd Mayweather are set to lock horns in an unorthodox battle in Las Vegas tonight. It’s the fight that everyone has been talking about, and whether you’ve got MMA champion McGregor or undefeated boxer Mayweather, you’ve most definitely got an opinion.
So far on the press tour for this circus we’ve seen dancing, cat calling and even a bit of rapping, as well as the usual trash talk. Then there’s the fashion, whilst Mayweather favours a more dressed down casual look topped off with a snapback, McGregor’s look is more refined, his ‘Fuck You’ pinstripe suit made headlines around the world in June.
There’s no doubting McGregor’s mass appeal, the guy’s a global superstar, moving from the top of his game in MMA into boxing after a throwaway comment, and fighting an undefeated champion in his first fight. Having opened up the arena to a whole new crossover audience, headlining at one of the most anticipated fights in boxing history and drawing McGregor out of retirement in the process, he’s had the world as his runway at press call after press call in city after city. With each new city McGregor has showcased a new tailored 3-piece suit created different by his tailor David August Heil.
What better time then to unveil not one but two brand new fashion lines. Yes that’s right Voyeurs, fighting and marketing go hand in hand. With they hype surrounding this bout and the deals put on the table for both fighters, I suspect this is the first in a long line of brands and endorsements we’ll see from Mayweather and McGregor no matter what the outcome of this huge money fight, also if you’re interested, I’m predicting a call for a rematch before they even step into the ring.
Both McGregor and Mayweather will unveil their fashion lines tonight one hour before they touch gloves in Vegas. August McGregor is a collaboration between luxury tailor David August and McGregor on a new menswear label featuring luxury sportswear, accessories and tailored suits. It’s McGregor’s first foray into fashion but he already has place for a more affordable diffusion line.
“Fashion is something that I am truly passionate about, and I am excited to share exactly that with my fans by giving them a chance to share my iconic looks. We casually chatted about doing a line together, but we finally got serious over the past several months. I know the public will love what lies ahead.” Conor McGregor
Known for his snappy dressing, McGregor has made a point of calling out opponent Mayweather for not dressing up enough for press conferences leading up to fight night. The MMA fighter has been heavily involved in producing his collection and his 10 piece SS18 line will be available from January 2018 after being unveiled 60 minutes before go time tonight.
Never one to be outdone by McGregor, Mayweather has partnered with designer Philipp Plein on a collection of his own, which will also be unveiled one hour before gloves touch tonight. Plein is a far more cool, urban fashion designers and has wowed audiences at global Fashion Month for years, his designs are worn by Kylie Jenner, Will Smith, Madonna and now, well, you.
“I got the idea after meeting Floyd at my Resort ’18 show in Cannes. I prefer to get involved with the personalities who are associated with the brand, I don’t like one shot collaborations. Given Floyd’s taste and preference for unapologetic luxury and the fact that he was already a customer of the brand, I thought it would make sense to develop something together.” Philipp Plein
We don’t know a lot about the range from Mayweather and Plein but we do know that it’s a long term arrangement and a ‘multi-year agreement’ so it’s definitely got legs. What’s for sure though, is that right before these two step in the ring for the weirdest boxing match since Grant Bovey and Ricky Gervais, we’ll be getting a preview of what millennials everywhere will be wearing next Spring.
